Description
America is expanding west and the main character in Willa Cather’s early 20th century novel, O Pioneers!, has to decide whether she will stay to carve out what was typically a male role as the head of the farm. She stays and in time, she develops a deep respect for the land.
Is this the American spirit, feminism or something else?
Of course, there’s more to the story. Some interesting information about the life and writing of Willa Cather leading up to the publication of O Pioneers! has been recently published by scholar Daryl W. Palmer.
