Description

America is expanding west and the main character in Willa Cather’s early 20th century novel, O Pioneers!, has to decide whether she will stay to carve out what was typically a male role as the head of the farm. She stays and in time, she develops a deep respect for the land.

Is this the American spirit, feminism or something else?

Of course, there’s more to the story. Some interesting information about the life and writing of Willa Cather leading up to the publication of O Pioneers! has been recently published by scholar Daryl W. Palmer.

O Pioneers! by Willa Cather

Meeting

“The land belongs to the future . . . that’s the way it seems to me. . . I might as well try to will the sunset over there to my brother’s children. We come and go, but the land is always here. And the people who love it and understand it are the people who own it-for a little while.”

So writes Willa Cather in the voice of book’s protagonist, Alexandra Bergson.
